Great romance thriller!!!
By Josette L. Romero
From the moment I picked up this book I was hooked and couldn't put it down. It is very well written. The characters were real people that you can actually relate to and if you are a California native you will love the fact that the locations and landmarks mentioned in the book are real as the story takes place in Humboldt County. Overall it's a great romance/suspense that kept me hooked from beginning to end and wanting more after it ended!!

Fantastic Read

Emily McAlister has dreams of deaths--deaths she cannot prevent and her death is next. If she cannot find and stop the person who sent her friend Stefanie to her death in the ocean, she will meet the same end. The ocean that Emily has always loved will snuff out her life unless she can some way change what her dream revealed--something she has never been able to do before.

Sergeant Mark Thurgood hates the ocean. Memories that make him physically ill roar to life when his duties demand he be near that water -- water that seems to be alive and threatening. His assistant Robin patrols and takes ocean areas calls ordinarily. However, when the persistent Emily McAlister, with desperation in her blue eyes, storms into his life declaring her friend's death is murder not an accident, Mark's life spins out of control regardless of how hard he tries to shut down his emotions.

The secondary characters add mystery, suspense, and intrigue as they slip in and out of Emily and Mark's emotional warfare. Emily's Aunt Vivian and Uncle Jack, who cared for her after the death of her parents, still keep close tabs on her and want her near even though she is out of college and employed as a whale-sightseeing boat driver in San Francisco Bay. In the small town they live in, they are socially prominent. Vivian knows all the gossip in town and Uncle Jack is always busy at the casino but continues to manage Emily's trust fund for her. They and others like Stefanie's surfer boyfriend Sam and his brother Jonathan; Bruce, a career criminal; Robin, Mark's assistant; Captain Peterson; and even Mark's absent ex-wife and his dead partner help to weave an ever-tightening, ominous web around Emily and Mark. In spite of all the denial, danger, confusion, and fear, Emily and Mark's connection to each other grows stronger and stronger.

Kristin Miller lures the reader into the mental, physical, emotional and even spiritual struggles that beset the characters. Each of them struggles with his or her own demons and aloneness in unique ways. As Ms. Miller brings the troubled Mark and Emily together, she keeps the reader in the moment with them. Ms. Miller creates a setting with storminess in times of trouble that adds a gripping fear. Also, the convoluted idea of a `glimpse Heaven' makes one shudder.

This redemptive story with its subtle foreshadowing, expressive imagery, and joy of love lifts the spirit and makes the heart happy.

Synopsis: "Depend on a man? Never! Genre: Romantic Suspense

First Sentence: "Facing certain death wasn't as terrifying as Stefanie Jefferies would've thought." That is truly a kick ass opening line! It's filled with tension. I don't know about you, but it definitely makes me want to keep reading.

Brownie Points: One of my favorite things about Kristin's writing is her attention to detail and her world-building. Her descriptions are so vivid that the world her characters live in jumps off the page. In our interview, she said she wanted to do justice to her love for Humboldt County and I think that definitely shows through in her writing. Setting can make or break a book, and hers definitely makes it. I also loved the romance between Mark and Emily. I loved their first meeting, because their attraction was present without being way overdone and too much like 'love at first sight', which happens a lot in romance. It walked that thin line between two much or two little perfectly. I continued to enjoy them throughout the story.

Beefs: I had no beefs with this book. I was happy as a clam while reading and was definitely satisfied at the end.

Ending: I'm not a big reader of romantic suspense, but at least for me, this novel had great twists and wasn't predictable in the least. It pulled me in right from the beginning and kept me eager to keep reading until the end. I was thoroughly impressed. Not only is the plot great, but the romance will make you melt--so sweet-- and I absolutely loved the last line of the book. Something about it just resonated right for me.

Recommendation and General Comments: Overall, this is a really fantastic read. I'm not normally a romantic suspense reader, but I was still very entertained. There was no point where I even remotely considered putting this book down. It had sweet moments that had me sighing, hilarious moments that had me laughing out loud, and of course, chilling suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. Kristin is a fabulous writer.

This is a great book and I highly recommend it. Whether or not you usually enjoy romantic suspense, it's a great read. If you're a fan of romance and good writing, this is a book you will love. Go buy it!
