The Meaning Behind The Words

J.R.R. Tolkien's deep Christian faith was an integral part of his life and writings. A Roman Catholic in a country where there was still considerable prejudice against "Popery," he had to deal with social exclusion and some harassment during his youth. Having to deal with this discrimination strengthened his faith. Stratford Caldecott, himself an English Catholic, has written a very beautiful account of the ways in which Tolkien's faith and vision helped him form the tales which became his life's work.

Caldecott's account is partly a spiritual biography of Tolkien himself and partly a spiritual analysis of his writings. I am not a Catholic, and while I am very familiar with Tolkien's worlds inevitably some of the religious symbolism and references had passed me by, so I am grateful to Caldecott for enhancing my future enjoyment and understanding. I also appreciated his references to the works of other Tolkien authorities, especially Verlyn Flieger, whose writings are complementary to and expand on much of what is found in this volume. There is very little reference to Tolkien "fandom", though the last of Caldecott's nine Appendices is given over to a fairly critical analysis of the three Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies.

In many ways I found reading The Power of the Ring evoked the same pleasure and mystery I experience when I reread Tolkien, and there can be no higher praise than that.

Not in original key, and CD doesn't have standard files

We bought it thinking it would be fun to play along to the classics. The back cover lists songs with their famed artists, like "I Love Rock 'N Roll" with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and "Smells like Teen Spirit" with Nirvana. Unfortunately, the sheet music inside and the "Sound-Alike CD Tracks" are not in the same key of their famed counterpart.

The disc comes with a proprietary speed slow-downer lite, and there aren't any typical files that can be exported (i.e. Midi or MP3). Mind you, it almost didn't matter, seeing as how they weren't in the original key anyhow and also had no melody (vocals) to follow along with as a guide for beginners.

I can't recommend this product over the many better ones out there.

This story was as hot and steamy as a cold shower!

I don't enjoy stories about arrogant, entitled men buying sex and using the woman like their toy which pretty much sums up this story. The whole basis of this story of a contest between triplets (sanctioned by the triple'ts parents) to see who can impregnate her first is cavalier and ridiculous. Although the character does stand up to them on occasion for which I applaud her, she does take money for sex which is prostitution. While I don't judge women who have to resort to prostitution to survive, I don't get off on their misfortune. In reality, from what I have read or seen of their stories (we often treat them in the Emergency room), they do not enjoy the sex having become desensitized to it. Furthermore, men who purchase sex rarely treat these women with gentleness, kindness, or passion. There is a difference between passion and just getting your rocks off. This story was just a turnoff to me!
