Applied neuroscience minus the hype and fantasy

Well researched and clearly written by an expert. Provides a unique look into actual application of the latest findings in neuroscience without all the unrealistic hype and fantasy. Also, the best treatment of ethical considerations in neuroscience. Don't let the hokey name and cover illustration throw you off.

His book provides interesting insight into some of the government intelligence agency projects but mostly with a one-sided view

For someone who is a professor of Biomedical Ethics, written a book on Secret State Experiments on Humans, served as a senior staff member on two presidential ethics commissions, served as president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, I'm surprised that he believes "those who think they have been victimized by government mind control experiments are misguided". His book provides interesting insight into some of the government intelligence agency projects but mostly with a one-sided view on how useful the projects are with little consideration of potential ethical concerns or mention of previous human subject experimentation violations such as MKUltra.

I too recently took a ''neuro-ethics'' course with the author, and I wasn't required to purchase this book - I did so because the material in the course was utterly engrossing and I wanted more, more, more. This book did not disappoint. Open your eyes and mind, and start thinking more fully about where the world has been and where it is headed - something we all need to do. Highly recommended!

Good book for a self-learner who is not a microbiologist.

The title of this book is the perfect description. It covers "Essential Microbiology". It is not "detailed and complete reference for professionals in the field". It is easy to understand and read and covers what you'd need to know, but not at a level for those who will be making a living at this.

This is an older edition of the book so I doubt it would ever be used in a university class. But these older editions are a great thing for self learners who want to learn a subject outside of their profession. In my case I teach High School science but I'm not a biologist and this book is written at a level where someone like me with graduate level science training in a different field could quickly learn something new. It's actually easy and fun to read, Then if you need more detail on some area buy another book.

this book was exactly what i needed. The bookstore at my school tried selling the hardcopy version for over $300 but by getting the paperback version i saved over $250 on just this textbook alone!! i would recomend to but the paperback copy instead of the hardcopy and DO NOT buy it from your school's bookstore!!!

Tattoo artist George Bone is one of the few surviving people with tattoos by Mingins, who was an enigmatic man about whom very little is known. "When he was doing his tattoos, he actually never spoke. His work spoke for itself."

And that it did. Mingins's work was extremely popular in his time. "His artistic work and custom designs were of high quality, and really stood apart from work of other tattoo artists," states Bone, "I had the impression, perhaps mistakenly, that he was the type of man who would say no to an interview, so it's not surprising that so little is known about him."

Mingins's scrapbooks convey a beautiful overview of the world of tattoos and attitudes toward them during the first half of the 20th century.

Incredible historical document

Schiffmacher deserves huge credit for preserving and compiling all the wonderful artifacts and photos relating to our art and business---I first went crazy over old tattoo photos with the publication of Spider Webb's "heavily tattooed men and women" back in the 70's ( another whose books are really worth getting) This is an exact reproduction of English Master Tattooist Rich Mingins personal scapbook--page after page exactly as he pasted it in of all matter of tattoo photos---his own superb work,and any and all photos he could get get his hands on, from all eras...some wild stuff here! Pics of work benches, tattoo store fronts from all over the world, plenty of staged photos of machine touching already healed tattoos-- a great way to study machines with a magnifying glass... no backstory except for some hand written info by Mingins himself. You really have to have a sense of wonder to appreciate and study these ancient photos within---like, who WERE these people?!? What were they thinking? Their sexual lives? Plenty to speculate about there! A must for any tattoo historian!

I own many books with beautiful and colorful photos of tattoos, but this book is quite distinctive because the photos are a real rarity. They're very old and I'm amazed that Mr. Mingins managed to acquire them and preserve them. They're truly fascinating....
