I sigh heavily and stare back at my reflection. My coral-blue eyes are wide and full of fear, like a deer staring at a pair of headlights. I have to wonder if it has anything to do with Mr Moneybags? With feelings that I know are trying to surface? I shake my head at myself. You cannot allow any man to get under your skin Coral, not ever, you hear me? I nod vigorously in agreement with myself, take a deep breath, square my shoulders and march out of the ladies. I walk along the hallway, down the small flight of stairs and into the reception area to meet Mr bloody Freeman and his team...

As he turns around and looks at me - I instantly stop walking towards them. I think my heart has relocated itself somewhere in my throat, and I have the strangest feeling spreading within me, like every single cell in my body as awoken. And there's this weird, magnetic pull that feels as though my whole body is being pulled helplessly towards him.What the fuck is that? I frown at the floor and place my hand on my stomach - Am I getting sick?

Clair Delaney was born and raised in England and currently lives in rural Wales. Her love of reading is what prompted her to try her hand at writing. Great romance full of depth

I don't read a lot of romance novels and series because I find so many of them to be shallow, either in story line, characterization, or both. I enjoy stories with well-developed characters that I can get really invested in and these aren't as easy to come by as one may think. Author Claire Delaney's latest series was recommended to me and I am so glad that I took a chance on this one because it is exactly the sort of story that grabs me and doesn't let go.

"Coral" is the story of a 30-year old woman, named Coral, who is working to make peace with her past and herself. The story starts off with a pretty amazing back-story, beginning when Coral was just four years old that explains exactly what happened to her over the course of several years and the trauma that occurred in a little girl's life. Fast forward as an adult and Coral is someone who understandably struggles with relationships. One day, things are turned upside down at work and she is face to face with a man, Tristan, who makes her feel something that she has never felt before. There are plenty of intense moments and struggle here as Tristan is her new boss and Coral still has a lot that she is dealing with from her past, including some present abandonment issues.

I found the first installment to this series to be incredibly engaging and so easy to relate to. Coral was very likable for me and I am looking forward to finding out what happens next with these two.

This the first installment of the series and it packs a powerful punch.I am in love with Tristen myself.He's just so perfect.I love Coral's character also.She is sweet,witty and has a caring heart.And two of them together make perfect sense.But there are a lot issues in between them.Coral's past. Her past keeps living inside her head and stopping her from being the perfect lover for Tristen.But I am holding hope that between George and Tristen they will work things out.

This is wonderful story that is going to go far in the world of romance reading.

This was an intriguing romance story focusing on Coral Stevens and a new man she meets, her new boss Tristan Freeman. She has to face her past in order to handle the present and I loved the way the story unraveled. The chemistry between them was so strong and it was interesting to see the effect he had on her. Definitely a fun romance story with unique characters that has impressed me from the beginning. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

I think I have at least a dozen books on my Writing shelf exclusively on story structure, including such gems as the books by K.M. Weiland, Larry Brooks and James Scott Bell. Between the three of them, they tell you just about everything a writer needs to know about story structure. There's only one thing they don't tell you: how to actually plan a story around it. Knowing what should go into a well-plotted novel is one thing, but using this knowledge to **shape your own story** into publishable material is a totally different skill. And this is exactly what H.R. D'Costa teaches you to do.

The book targets novelists and script writers alike. If ever you felt stuck with writing a logline, this book walks you through the process, making it a breeze. If ever you asked yourself where exactly your Act 1 break should go - your answer is in this book (and it's not where you thought it should be!). It's packed with small but immensely important discoveries like these - and D'Costa doesn't just tell you what they are and how to use them, but actually guides you through the process of applying them to your story!

Another important thing, this book really motivates you to dig into your story deeper and deeper. As of writing this review, I've only read it once - all the while applying its principles to my current WIP which resulted in turning its admittedly messy "plot" into a convincing and coherent story. Still, I'm under the impression that I haven't even scratched the surface yet. This book is a true mine of hands-on information on exactly how to plot out a story.

I've read other books on the craft of writing by this author and been very satisfied. With this book however, at first I didn't think I'd be able to recommend it. By the time I got to the middle, my opinion changed. There is some new material here, but the most valuable point is that old material is explained in a fresh light and much more clearly. Very worthwhile.

OK! Where is the hidden camera! I know there is one because this book was written especially for me!
It's written in a simple, yet witty language, pin-pointing the problem any writer may have with the most difficult aspect -in my opinion- of the writing process, that of planning / outlining / thinking of their story.
The examples of well known films are helpful not only for screenwriters but for any writer trying to imagine how the action plans H.R. D'Costa provides may be implemented in their world.
Although there is the well trodden path of the "theory" behind any written text, the book does not stick to what character is and what antagonist is, s.o.. It does however, give a bit of a twist on well-known terms, that help the reader think of them in another way.
The only drawback that I find in this book, is that it does not discourage any writer from writing - especially beginners, but not only. It urges them to try their best and commit to what may become a dream come true!

This is a comprehensive review of Jewish magic from the 10th to the 15th century, including a rich lode of folklore. Many well-known Jewish traditions are explained, such as why a glass is broken at a wedding, and how the expression mazel tov is related to a belief in Astrology. Trachtenberg deals extensively with Golems, Succubi, the Lillim, (from Lilith--Adam's first wife), and other magical creatures, some well known such as werewolves, and others not so well, such as estrie, mare and broxa. There are detailed descriptions of talismans, amulets, charms, and other curious magical objects. There are chapters dealing with dream interpretation, medical beliefs, necromancy, and other forms of divination. There is also a short glossary, so if you are having trouble telling the difference between a Kaddish and a Kiddush, you're in luck. The author, Joshua Trachtenberg (b. 1904, d. 1959) was a reform rabbi on the east coast of the US. This is an elaboration of his Columbia University Ph.D. thesis. Trachtenberg's appreciation of the role of folk-magic in Jewish culture is important for the study of Judaism, and also the roots of modern Pagan beliefs and practices.

About the Author
Joshua Trachtenberg (1904-59) served in the American rabbinate for nearly three decades. He is the author of The Devil and the Jews. Moshe Idel is Professor of Jewish Thought at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His numerous publications include Kabbalah: New Perspectives, Messianic Mystics, and Hasidism: Between Ecstasy and Magic. He received the Israel Prize for excellence in the field of Jewish philosophy in 1999.

Good high level review, lack of flesh and details.

This is an excellent introduction to the subject of Judaism and magic & superstition.

It covers broad territory - powers of good & evil, demons, holy names, medicine, amulets, divination, dreams, and more - and supplies an extensive bibliography for those interested to continue studying any of the subjects in the book.

What I didn't find in the book is details or flesh - the book has a lot of breadth, but just scratches the surface on each of the subjects. Also, the book gives details about the customs of German Jews at specific centuries, but rarely mentions customs of, say, Jews from Islamic countries.

So if you're looking for an introduction, this is the book for you. If you're looking for depth, I suggest books such as Aryeh Kaplan's.

Jewish Magic & Superstition: An Academic Look at Medieval Jewish Folklore

This review is about the context of this work, Jewish Magic and Superstition, and not about this edition, per se. It seems that this book has gone into public domain and Forgotten Books is one of several companies that is making this work available to the general public. I know this because I accidentally misplaced my first copy and found it around the time I received this edition from Amazon. The "other" edition, published by The University of Pennsylvania Press has a purple cover with a medieval art-inscription underneath the title and inside is a reproduction of "Popular Medieval Amulet to Protect the Mother and Child Against an Attack by Lilith". And, unlike the Forgotten Press ed., the pages are a light cream color as opposed to white. The fonts, text, annotations and bibliography are identical. Either copy is priceless to own.

About the text. It is a comprehensive and explicit look at some of the practices believed to have been a part of the Jewish experience in the periods just before, during and right after in medieval Western Europe. This is not a text that covers an exhaustive look at all Jewish superstitious beliefs nor for all periods of Jewish existence. That would be impossible for even 10 volumes. For a look at Jewish beliefs of Eastern Europe, I highly recommend, The Book of Legends: Sefer Ha Aggadah.

Some of the topics, Rabbi Joshua Trachtenberg (of blessed memory) used as a part of his doctoral dissertation, "The Powers of Evil"-- thoughts concerning the makeup, work and influence of evil. "Man and The Demons," "In the Name of..."-- using incantations of Biblical phrases and divine names. "Amulets," "Dreams," "Astrology" are also covered thoroughly.

One reviewer erroneously stated that this book "only scratches the surface...[lacks] the breath and flesh." What book was he reading? Again, this book is not supposed to address all Jewish beliefs for every given period or every locale. Our own experiences are influenced by the environment by which we inhabit, that's true for all people at all times. He should not be expected to answer all questions for all Jews at all times. This is for a specific period and for a specific location. Period. By the way, the bibliography is well-research at 90+ pages to support his conclusions.

This book, I would say, reveals the basis of Modern (not Classical) Christian Anti-Semitic beliefs. To see how medieval Christian attitudes were demonstrated I would suggest Dr. Trachenberg's follow-up (and part two of his doctoral dissertation) The Devil and The Jews, and Shakespeare and The Jews by James Shapiro.

Fascinating book about Jewish superstitions

I consulted this book almost constantly while writing my historical novels, Rashi's Daughters, Book 1: Joheved and Rashi's Daughters, Book II: Miriam. For a long time it was out of print and I'm so glad to see it's available in a new printing. Don't look for Kabbalah in this book though; it's almost all from medieval and Talmudic sources. I wish the bibliography was better.
