The Richard Strauss enigma...

Many biographies of the most famous German composer of the 20th century have been written, and much time has been spent discussing his political and social opinions since he chose to remain in Germany throughout the Nazi years. This biography is readable, includes many personal little anecdotes not included in other books, and also some of the political discussion, together with excerpts of letters from and to Strauss. It has excellent photos which make the subject more accessible, together with family photos and locales. It covers his life, compositions, anecdotes, and some discussions of his politics, all in one easy to read book. I have read several biographies of Strauss, and found this one to be very personal, entertaining, and informative. It is recommended to any student of German history, musical history, or Strauss in particular.

Best English-language guide to Strauss the man

You can derive pleasure and profit from other books on Richard Strauss, notably Michael Kennedy's (my review of Kennedy's latest Strauss tome is already on Amazon.com) and Norman Del Mar's; but nobody can claim to know Strauss the human being who has not read Kurt Wilhelm's magisterial account. Wilhelm brings the day-to-day behavior of Strauss and his family to life, in a way that no previous biographer -- however diligent -- has managed to do. You finish this production feeling as if you have met the man.

Wilhelm appears to have been given the run of Strauss-related archives at Garmisch, Bavaria, which earlier chroniclers either couldn't or simply didn't use. Old enough to have corresponded with Strauss in person, Wilhelm (who spent part of the Nazi period in jail) is neither oppressively autobiographical nor mindlessly sycophantic: just quizzical, fair-minded, and courageous in his judgements. I don't imagine Strauss himself would have wanted any other sort of tribute.

The pity is that for this English translation (which itself reads very fluently), the original German text has been considerably cut. It remains a splendid book anyhow; but one wonders why any of it had to be omitted. Do English-speaking readers, even in the brave new world of LITTLE BRITAIN, deserve to be treated as morons?

One curiosity of the book is the author's oddly sympathetic reference to Hans Frank, whose favorable disposition to Strauss (as well as to Gerhart Hauptmann and Hans Pfitzner), the author describes as "always . . . fair, friendly and helpful."

Giving the fanatical Nazi Reich Minister of Justice / Governor General of Poland any credibility for assisting a few `artistic' qualifiers for Aryan status, while arranging the wholesale slaughter of Jews, comes across as an unsavory sin of omission.

Have a fresh highlighter on hand for this fine book

This well-written book by a very knowledgeable, intelligent and charismatic teacher places "love your neighbor" in the context of our biblical heritage. For a book that makes you think as much as this one does it is easy to read and come back to. My only problem with it is that I used an entire highlighter while going through it. Thanks Fr, Donahue.

Excellent

If you've read Garner's stuff, you'll notice some overlap. This book restated "The Winning Brief" multiple times, and it has most of the same examples (Demand Letters, Memos, etc.) as "The Redbook 2d" (I don't have the 3d of that one).

That's the disclaimer. But I still loved the book. It's largely written as a how-to, gives you tips to improve your legal writing, and is a resource that I'll continue to reference throughout my career.

If you'd like a quick read (with accompanying exercises to test your skill) this is a great book to have. Then, when you become more interested, you can nab the Redbook, Legal Usage dictionaries, etc. In sum, it's a great place to start.

One objection, though: Garner's answers in the back often deal with only the Easy exercise, not all three (Easy, Intermediate, Hard). I realize that giving answers to all three would lengthen the book, but the easy one is exactly that--easy. I'd like to see his Heller brief, or any of the harder ones just to compare. But that's only a minor annoyance. Otherwise, it's a real asset if you're interested in improving your legal writing. And you should be.

Who knew?

This book was purchased for a tax research class. It absolutely delivers on its title, more than I even could have imagined. I was immediately impressed by the author's matter-of-fact yet engaging style, and the content is quite useful for non-legal professionals too. If you ever write persuasive letters, articles or blog posts, there are many practical tips in this book. It is an entertaining and thought provoking read. After most sections, I was left scratching my head with a puzzled look on my face. Not questioning the author's ideas, I was instead left wondering why they were not more mainstream, legal and otherwise. I really hope many more people, even those who only occasionally write, read this book!

Let's be clear about what this is

If you're looking for a text to substitute for a Pre-Law English course, this might be its best application. If you're a professor or English instructor looking for a great text to teach Pre-Law English, it's worth a look. It could also be good for someone already in the law field who has been writing "Legalese" and needs to learn a better way. This book can teach how to distill the core of a matter and how to change unclear thought into something coherent and succinct.

Amazon's rating system is, unfortunately, about how well I liked it, not how useful it might be to others. To be fair (which is why I gave it a 3 instead of a 2), I have an MA in English Rhetoric and have spent my life in the writing/publishing world, so it does not fit my needs. I'm new to the field of law and hoped it would teach me the required elements of various briefs/documents. Out of a 240 page book, about 50 pages is devoted to what I sought (Appendix B - Four Model Documents on drafting an Appellate Brief, Motion, Contract, and a Research Memo). Appendix A is "How to Punctuate" which, ostensibly, if you're over 30, you learned in school somewhere along the line.

The remainder of a book is simply an advanced writing course with examples drawn from legal documents. A typical example would be that you are given a convoluted sentence which you then have to break into smaller, more succinct and understandable sentences. The advanced form of that same exercise is a convoluted paragraph in which you have to figure out what is being said and rewrite it to make it more clear and coherent. Other exercises involve interviewing lawyers and judges to find out their preferences in what they like to read as far as legal documents are concerned. The book also assumes you have access to a law library and lots of time to research. One example is: "Find a judicial opinion that takes several paragraphs before getting to the point."

Be more diligent than I was -- take a look at the Table of Contents from the "Look Inside" link, and even download a sample of it to your Kindle before purchasing. Apparently I simply looked at the reviews.

Essential, but still lacking

It's great to have this book available but it falls somewhat short in being a complete picture of Kawakubo's work. I wish there had been more images from earlier collections and more content on the menswear.

"My fashion pedigree is wholly derived from childhood predilection for wrapping swaths of cloth and ribbon left over from my mother's sewing projects around my body in primitive, avant-gardist arrangements. I would punctuate the look with bright pink plastic heels, the kind that came in a blisterpack from the supermarket, and then hobble over to my mother and ask her with all the gravitas of a four-year-old-girl:

"Mom, am I fashion?"

"Yes sweetie," she'd reply, "You're fashion."

Though not all are subjected to--blessed with?--a congenital penchant for getting dressed, internet culture has given rise to an entire generation of self-styled fashion aficionados who privilege ideas and images over the clothes themselves, and big-idea designers like Rei Kawakubo are their patron saints. I can't pinpoint the moment of discovery, but in a mainstream landscape of bronzed legs, big tits, and beachy waves, Rei Kawakubo and the various arms of her fashion house crept in like a slow revelation; dark, angular creatures from another world moved into the periphery and eventually came to embody my love for clothes that are about clothes."

I've always liked Caroline Cooney

I've always liked Caroline Cooney. This book was really good. The time travel is fun. Cooney goes into detail about each year the story is set. I can see the characters and the settings. I can see the world as they see it. It brought out emotion as these characters struggle. The modern day father will really tick you off and he deserves it.

This not a horrible book!

I recently read the scathing review of this book posted in February. I think from an adult perspective one can see the cliches and flaws, but this is meant for a twelve year old and older. I honestly enjoyed the storyline and yes, it would have been great if they delved deeper into the characters, plot, etc. but again this is a young adult novel. I liked the premise, the speaking style, and most of all I was a fan when the first book came out in 1995. I was enamored with the story at the time and am very excited to read all of the books in their succession. I had to wait years for the story to continue! So, for those fans of time travel, young adult fiction, and love/romance stories will enjoy this. I can guarantee it.
