He is a philosopher, neuroscientist, and geostrategist. A prize-winning scholar, he has published 21 books proposing many innovative concepts and theories in global politics and security. The Politics of Emerging Strategic Technologies: Implications for Geopolitics, Human Enhancement and Human Destiny by Nayef R.F. Al-Rodhan was sent to me to read and review.

(1) This is NOT a "fluff" book
(2) This is NOT a read in a week or two here and there book
(3) This DOES require some level of intelligence and awareness of our political, scientific and technological situation at this point and time to understand and apply
(4) This DOES require a dictionary or google help from time to time for understanding

The author approaches our current advances in technology and how they are having good and bad effects on our political situation and the earth in a scientific geological manner. How? Simply put it looks at how genetic modifications are playing a part in how our world advances. By looking deeply at how the choices we are making scientifically are affecting policies in our countries as well as looking at the moral and emotional concerns by various parties in regards to scientific changes on the horizon.

What is more important? Advancing technologically and scientifically or maintaining the dignity and health of the human race? Is compromise possible? Are the many changes on the horizon going to change how our policy makers view humanity, their place in the world and how our nation grows and changes alongside other progressive countries?

All are important questions that come as a result of this book. Although definitely a difficult book to read in the sense that it held a lot of information I was unfamiliar with and thus required some research, I still find it to be well laid out, well written and very informative in mostly layman's terms.

Is this one highly recommended by me? Well, to some yes, to others no. It's a 3 star book in my opinion. One in which it rates highly in it's category but not highly in my normal "to-read" list.

Very interesting book about emerging technologies

Let me start by saying this book was very difficult for me to read - not because it isn't a good book - but primarily because it is not the type of book I would usually read. Having said that, I understand the concepts in the book, but did have to do a bit of research while I was reading.

One of the key issues discussed in this book is how our world is changing due to new technologies and what kind of effect these changes have on us socially and politically. Are the decisions we are making going to have more good or bad ramifications politically?

Consider the worlds research in enhancing humans via drugs (making them stronger, bigger, able to live longer) or genetic manipulation (do you want a boy or girl, blonde hair or brown, etc) - how each country and their citizens, political parties, religious sects feel about this type of manipulation will shape how our world advances as well as how we are individually judged on our morality.

This book makes you question what should be more important - keeping ourselves and our morality in check OR making sure we advance scientifically as quickly as other countries? Each country is constantly pushed to "build it bigger" or "build it stronger" - but at what cost? Will our country be bypassed by others if we don't keep pushing forward?

After I grasped the concept of the book (and the big words I didn't know!), I actually enjoyed this book. It is not one I would choose to read on the beach for the day, but it very informative and really made me think about the effect of rapid advancements have on our country.

There is also a vast discussion in emerging strategic technologies and its impact on geopolitics and human dignity. Among all the guidelines discussed in the book, it is found that there is more emphasis on the practice of moral standards and also legal framework that helps in maintaining the human dignity in an effective way. On the other side, technologies are also influencing the political world to bringa positive change in economy and world current affairs. So it is definitely worth reading and most importantly it contains a valuable source of information and gives a progressive view and acts as a guide from scientific point of view as to how future generations can draw a good helpline and bring about a positive change in economy and life style.

LOVED IT

One More Kiss by Susan Ward was fantastic! I did take notice that it was book 2 in the series so set out to read book 1 and glad I did. Book 1, One Last Kiss, starts the journey of Jack and Linda initially meeting so I highly recommend you start there.
This book was a little out of the norm for me as it takes place in 1980-81. Jack is a famous rock star who happened to play Woodstock and had a run of bad luck in his life of late. He's lost his wife and his son and is struggling to keep hold of his daughter. Linda stumbled across Jack in book 1, drunk on the beach. Since then they have been inseparable unless Jack is on tour.
Linda is known in the music world as a groupie, but had her reasons for why. She was on the search for her musician father but her meeting with him didn't go the way she'd have liked. Since then Linda and Jack have gotten much closer. Book 2 takes place about 8 months after their first meeting.
I'm unsure of the exact age difference between Jack and Linda, my guess would be anywhere from 15-25 years, but you'd never know that there was one. Even after losing his wife, Jack is still able to love Linda as if she was his first love. He is so caring and gentle with her. Nothing fatherly but knows she's still young, has finished her degree and wants to make a place for herself in the world. Jack wants nothing more than to provide for her in order to have her by his side at all times. He tries so hard throughout this story to get Linda to open up more and go public with their relationship but she holds back.
Getting the offer of a lifetime, not only career wise but also a continuation of her schooling, Linda keeps a secret from Jack. She leads Jack to believe that she would be going on the last leg of his tour with him but she has other plans in mind. Letting Jack know those plans was tearing her up. It was frustrating to me as well! I really like Linda but since I really love Jack, I wanted to ring her neck, too.
By the halfway point in this story, I was praying things were going to wrap up. I found myself in love with Jack by the end and was not ready for the final pages just knowing that their issues were not going to have a conclusion this time around. I can totally relate to how Linda was feeling, given her age she wants to set out in the world to try to support herself but still love Jack just the same.
I really hope the next book is the last in this series or else just that Linda at least gives into her heart and Jack. I love falling in love more and more, book after book with characters. Jack is definitely one of my new favorite guys. Ms. Ward knows how to put love and life into her stories and it give her characters a real feel.
Jack and Linda get a 5 star rating from me for all their love and craziness.
Be sure to check out The Girl on the Half Shell, it's about Jack's daughter as an adult. I haven't read it yet but fully plan on rectify that soon. It will have multiple books as well.

Beautifully Written

The story of Jack and Linda.

This story is beautifully written and flows so well!

Jack is a singer, and described with golden curls, vivid blue eyes, and a tan (and at home at the beach).

Linda has just graduated college when the story begins, and she is desperately poor.

The chemistry between the couple sizzles, and I was never once lost due to lack of reading the first book.

Some of Linda's actions made me want to grab and shake her! She understands she isn't the same person as she was a few years prior, yet she can't seem to believe it.

I wanted to push her out of the way and tell Jack I'd gladly take what he was offering!

The author sets up nicely for the third book in the series, and I can't wait to see how it will all end!

Need more Jack and Linda

This is a great book that gives us more insight into Jack and Linda's world. I truly enjoyed reading how their relationship has progressed in the time that has passed from One Last Kiss.

Although not an ideal situation, and both still have their own issues they need to sort through, the love they express is real and heartwarming. And some hot scenes that make you squirm.

The more I read about Linda, the more I like her as a character and can relate to her. I love being inside her mind. Her internal battles are something I understand yet want her to overcome.

This read, in true Susan form, allows you to dig deeper than the typical romance novel and read between the lines. I am excited to see how their story continues and find myself rooting for Jack and Linda.

About the Author

Christos Ritzoulis studied chemistry at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and food science (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) at the University of Leeds. He has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and as an analyst at the Hellenic States General Chemical Laboratories. Today, Christos is a senior lecturer of food chemistry at the Department of Food Technology at TEI Thessaloniki, where he teaches food chemistry and physical chemistry of foods.

Stephen Krensky did not have the kind of childhood anyone would choose to write books about. It was happy and uneventful, with only the occasional bump in the night to keep him on his toes. He started writing in college and his first book was published in 1977, two years after he graduated. He is now the author of over 100 fiction and nonfiction children s books, including novels, picture books, easy readers and biographies. When Mr. Krensky feels he has spent enough time hunched over his computer, he likes to play tennis and softball. He and and his wife Joan live in Lexington, Massachusetts.
