His mother was the first press agent of the fan dancer Sally Rand. His step-mother is the legendary literary agent Rosalind Targ. He was married for thirty years to the sister of the infamous chess master Bobby Fischer. He briefly dated Henny Youngman’s cousin. He attended college with Alan Alda’s wife, Arlene. He was part of Ayn Rand’s study group in the 1950s--along with economist Alan Greenspan. He was a pioneer in laser research. He spent many years developing air-borne laser wind sensors for Lockheed and NASA. He co-founded the Stanford Research Institute remote viewing program--which was funded by the CIA--and was instrumental in tracking Soviet and Chinese weapon installations during the Cold War. And, he is a legally blind motorcyclist—who happens to be a Buddhist.

This is a fascinating memoir by a first-class intellect; the story of a physicist who has pushed the boundaries of siceince to explory the realms of parapsychology, spirituality, and the unexplained.

Russell Targ is currently retired and enjoys motorcycling in the desert (even though legally blind) and studying Dzogchen Buddhism. He lives in Palo Alto, California, with his wife.

Rare Authenticity!

I have been a student and a contributor to the field of parapsychology for the last 35 years. And, it is with good authority that I highly recommend all of the books by Russell Targ -- for two simple reasons. First, Russell Targ is a very clear thinker. He expresses his thoughts easily and with great clarity (and wit!). Second, and I believe of even greater importance, Russell Targ is one of the most experienced and successful parapsychology researchers of the last fifty years. He writes from the perspective of an insider's insider. And, I regard all that he has to say to be of great importance to anyone trying to understand this very tricky field.

In addition -- and this is particularly relevant to Do You See What I See? -- Russell, himself, has been on a path of personal transformation. This book is especially lucid in terms of integrating modern, scientific ideas with thought from Hindu and Buddhist teachings.

Because it is autobiographical, this is the most wide-ranging of all of Targ's books. It is also the most personal. For anyone interested in the human story behind the career of a great parapsychology researcher (not to mention laser physicist), this book is a must read.

History of Remote Viewing Revealed (And Much More)

Even though I first met Russell Targ nearly three decades ago, and having been active in the field,there were still things to be learned. This book is full of details that will delight the reader. In addition to the historical perspective of remote viewing, Targ manages to provide a personal perspective about what brought him to the field, the family relationships that give depth, and an understanding of what it all means in a global, even spiritual, context. If you think you've heard it all before; well you haven't.

As the reader learns, Targ is a very complex man, one who has followed a multiplicity of trails. While he is legally blind and a self-confessed "Mr. Magoo,", he really does ride a motorcycle efficiently. Though best known for studying consciousness, he is also a laser physicist. Somewhat surprisingly, those, and many other aspects of his life, are adroitly intertwined in a way that makes sense, but only after the disparate pieces are assembled.

This is the latests of several books he has written. They are clear, concise, and complelling. Do You See What I See? is highly recommended for both consciousness aficionados and those novice-curious.

Reminiscences & Conclusions from a Life Being Well Observed

This Book:

The reference to Zelig in the book's description is apropos, and I was glad to find it wasn't marketing bull manure. There are lots of great stories here from a guy at the top of his game, and really nothing with which you could take issue. Targ's not selling any ideas here that you have to buy; the research and evidence from his career are presented in other publications.

For me, "Do You See What I See?" was a fabulous book with many surprises. Not the least of which were these two, paraphrasing from Targ's writing: 1.) You're not your business card or personal story, and 2.) he believes that our species has evolved as far as it's going to, and now our business is about consciousness. To have seen a man who used to be all about military RV write such a thing is cause for pause and reflection. Although Targ wasn't an enlisted man, the massive organizations for which he worked literally wear their jobs and ranks in full view on their sleeves.

There are also pleasant, personal anecdotes from Targ's earliest life, while he grew-up marinated in the environment of famous authors who worked with his publishing father. He drops thoughtful, funny and surprising one-liners with some regularity. Probably my favorite was, "Indeed, at this stage of my life, I am much more interested in questioning answers, than my previous specialty of answering questions." Having been afflicted with that attitude most of my life, his writing feels like that of a kindred soul.

The style of this book is rambling, through Targ's stream of awareness. Since eidetic memory isn't one of my skills, I'll go back and revisit the sections which spoke to me. This is obviously not a textbook so one shouldn't expect it read like one. There are many sections which I found touching or amusing, especially Chapter 14. If you'd enjoy "sitting by a master" and hearing them hold forth about real life experience, with real mistakes and triumphs, this would be a lovely read for you. Although I do get the feeling Targ would deflect the label "master."

My Introduction to Targ:

What interested me about Russell Targ's work is *who* he is, because that has informed and directed his now legendary work. Targ is one of the men who initiated the remote viewing (RV) programs for the U.S. military. The RV programs eventually led to colorful or dark fictions like those contained in the movies, The Men Who Stare at Goats or Suspect Zero. So this book has been my pleasant introduction to Targ's compendium of personal and professional experience. Happily but unexpectedly, I had found myself on a June Sunday standing next to Targ in a sparsely-populated conference hallway of an organization he co-founded, the International Remote Viewing Association. He and Paul Elder (Eyes of an Angel) were examining and photographing a drawing Paul made of an object Targ uses for RV.

I was interested in asking Targ a question about a project on which I'm working; to my pleasant surprise he invited me to sit with him at lunch. Targ was polite, direct and had droll humor in conversation. He even asked my opinion of one of IRVA's seemingly failed presenters. If you've co-founded the organization at which the presentation takes place, you're allowed that latitude. I hadn't seen the presentation, so I had the good fortune to answer that I couldn't have an opinion about it.

I asked Targ why he got into remote viewing and was simply interested in what intrigues him. In the years I've known one of Targ's beloved friends, Stephan A. Schwartz, I hadn't delved into Targ's now legendary work because I didn't always agree with the uses to which the work was put. So I intended this published bio to be my first look at what Targ thinks about himself and his work.

Just bought this a few days ago because our Life Group leaders recommended we all get it and study it together. So far, it has been a really good learning tool. As with most Sarah Young books, I'd have to give it top ratings. This is my second year with the Jesus Calling 365 day devotional, and I also journal while doing it , so it's fun to look back to last years journaling and see my growth. Thank You Sarah and Jesus.

This book, Jesus Calling - Experiencing God's Presence, is an interactive Bible study that invites you to read, think, ponder what you have read, and then write a response accordingly. The provocative questions stimulate thought and practical action for me that evokes a positive change in my lifestyle. Thoughtful and challenging study that draws you closer to the Lord

Having read a number of Sarah Young's Jesus Calling books I was keen to see how she took that material to studying the Word. This is an 8-week study that can be used in a group and/or individually. Each week has a different theme centred on Jesus' presence which is a key subject in a lot of Sarah's writings.

Each week starts with considering a topic that impacts the theme for the week. So, for example, God's Presence Brings You Peace is one week's theme. The topic of consideration involves anxiety and what robs you of peace. There are a handful of questions to stimulate thought on what robs you of peace. She then uses 2 passages from Jesus Calling to illustrate how the Lord's Presence enables you to receive peace. Then there is a passage of Scripture that you meditate upon. In this example, it's when the disciples fear for their safety on the boat as Jesus sleeps below. The authors encourage you to step into the story so you imagine what it would be like. There are a series of questions for reflection and meditation.

During the course of the next 5 days of that week there is a short passage for each day and 3-4 questions for reflection based around the theme for the week.

I appreciated how each week was set out. The Jesus Calling material was only used as an accompaniment to the verses of Scripture. But what was most appealing about this study were the provocative and challenging questions. They really made you reflect on both the Word and your own situation. I definitely felt a greater sense of Jesus' presence as I worked through each day's activity.

The book comes with a set of notes for a leader so it's all set out for a group study and I expect it would be a great exercise to do it this way.

Definitely recommended.

A classic reference book

This book is considered a classic reference book on the topic of vintage milk glass. A great addition for a collector's library. Too bad more photos aren't in color but maybe that would have made the book prohibitively expensive when it was first published.

one of the most helpful (and first) milk glass references

This classic guide has lots of great photos, although (like most milk glass books) it does have some errors in identification. If you really get into milk glass you will want to check the National Milk Glass Collectors Society website for a downloaded list of corrections.

One of the very best early books on milk glass- out of print since the 1950s but usually available at low cost. Very nice large black and white photos, especially of covered animal dishes, compotes, bowls and plates. If you love the 1800s milk glass you will love this book. It also has a section on common 1950s milk glass as a final chapter.

The best milk glass book

I feel this out of print volume is actually the most useful book available for those interested in 1800s milk glass. While the photos are black and white they are large and helpful.

I'm particularly interested in the Victorian covered animal dishes, and this book has a great section on them. It also covers platters, plates, compotes, candlesticks, etc. etc. etc.

straight to the point

The best advantage points of Sinatra reside in education/training and prototyping. Its small footprint and easy to read source code is an excellent starting point from whoever is interested in learning a web framework internals. Moreover, its approach based on simplicity and immediacy help us in producing proof of concept and prototype application.

Seldom I've found short to read and quick to be productive resources on that topic; after reading the ebook "Sinatra Starter" by Joe Yates, I've found really (condensed) great stuff inside it.

The book starts with clear instructions on how to install Sinatra and be quickly able to write our own webapp "bare to metal". But that is not the only thing you'll learn here...

In fact the book provides us also hints on how to approach building our web app in systematic way. I mean throughout the reading we learn just enough to play with Git and Github to versioning our code, Heroku to deploy our webapp and RSpec to test it.

Moreover, some important aspects are touched (not deeply cause the book short size, but anyway interesting): application modularity; Rack usage; how to layout a Sinatra project; how to use sessions; how to handle forms, route and request parameters; how to send emails; how to log application data; how to connect to a data base; useful weblinks on Sinatra world.

The "Short, Fast, Focused" caption on the cover page is really fitting!

Good intro to Sinatra

Expected something more from this book. The writing style is confusing. Other Starter Packt books are generally based on easy to follow tutirials - but this seems different. At some point readers may be lost. At the end it provided reference to some functions of Sinatra which is the most boring part. However, books on Sinatra are rare and this will help someone like me to learn or at least be interested in Sinatra.

Originally published under the auspices of the United States National Museum (now the Smithsonian), this book is the most comprehensive scholarly study of the history and use of the ancient swastika symbol ever undertaken. Its author, Thomas Wilson, participated in the excavation of an Indian burial mound in Ohio where several large copper swastikas were discovered. This unusual find sparked Wilson's curiosity and led to the research that ultimately became this book. The swastika symbol occurs in Mesopotamia and India as early as 8000 years ago, and prolifically on artifacts unearthed at the site of ancient Troy. It also appears on hundreds of Greek ceramic objects of the Geometric period, dating between the tenth and seventh centuries BC. Its use by indigenous peoples along the Mississippi and Amazon Rivers before 300 AD has raised serious questions about a possible diffusion from Eurasia. How or when this may have occurred, however, has never been established, nor has the underlying significance of the swastika ever been fully understood. The front cover illustration is from the book "Tree of Life, Mythical Archetype" by Gregory Haynes, also published by Symbolon Press. Haynes was the first to observe that the four largest rivers on the four continents bordering the Atlantic Ocean (the Nile, Amazon, Mississippi, and Baltic) stand in relation to each other as do the outer arms of an enormous swastika. In "Tree of Life, Mythical Archetype" he persuasively argues that ancient navigators mapped these four rivers and derived the swastika from them. This is a facsimile edition of Wilson's 1896 report, which includes all of his writings on the subject of the swastika. The text quality is generally good, while the quality of the more than 450 illustrations is very good to excellent.

excellent book - 1st published in 1894!

since you have called up this information, chances are you already know that the swastika had been in use all over the world ages and ages before adolf hitler started using it for his sad and sick crusade.
it is important to note that this book originally came out in 1894 (no, this is NOT a typing error!), therefore the author was able to approach the subject without the knowledge we all have.
basically, thomas wilson examined where and - if information was available - when the different forms of the swastika appeared in history: on coins, pottery, fabrics, etc.
writing a review that does this book, and especially its subject, justice seems impossible, i must admit. let me just add this: the swastika has been known for milleniums in all parts of the world. furthermore it appears, that it was mainly a symbol of good luck. the term swastika originates in the holy language of sanskrit. it is composed of "su", meaning "good", and "asti", meaning "being": "good being".
what a shame adolf hitler chose this beautiful symbol and managed to make most of us feel uneasy whenever we see it. i hope we will one day overcome this...

A Classic Study of the Swastika Symbol.

_The Swastika: The Earliest Known Symbol, and its Migrations; with Observations on the Migration of Certain Industries in Prehistoric Times_, first published in 1894 and reprinted here by Kessinger Publishing, is a commissioned study of the swastika symbol by Thomas Wilson, Curator in the Department of Prehistoric Anthropology in the U. S. National Museum. This study examines the swastika symbol in its various forms and traces its migrations throughout the globe. This study is obviously highly indebted to Count Goblet d'Alviella, whose important work on symbols (which indeed mentions the role of the swastika symbol) is mentioned extensively herein. In addition, this study includes countless drawings of symbols and artifacts showing the swastika symbol as well as plates showing various artifacts and drawings including the swastika symbol. As such, this study is an important work in archaeological research that traces the development of the swastika symbol in ancient times.

To begin with, the author explains how he came to write this study, being prompted by a certain gentleman as to whether the swastika existed in America. The author mentions such individuals as De Mortillet, De Morgan, and Zmigrodzki and their study of the swastika. From this the author turns to the first part of the study entitled "Definitions, Description, and Origins". The author notes the role of the symbol of the Cross, mentioning various forms of the Cross including the Latin Cross, the Greek Cross, St. Andrew's Cross, the Egyptian Cross, and the Celtic Cross. The author then mentions the works of Max Muller in this respect. Following this, the author discusses the forms of the swastika, including the "normal swastika" and the "suavastika". The author then attempts to define the swastika, mentioning the meaning of the word "swastika" in Sanskrit ("of good fortune"), the fylfot, the cross gammee and gammadion, as well as the role of ancient Indian sects. The author notes the theories of Max Muller, d'Alviella, Goodyear, and several other important individuals concerning the origin and migration of this ancient symbol. In addition, the author maintains that this is the most ancient Aryan symbol and that it came to take on a solar significance. The author also explains the difference between the "male swastika" and the "female swastika" as well as relating it to various deities in the Hindu pantheon. The author then explains the origins and migrations of the swastika showing in a detailed chart how this symbol traveled throughout the globe. The second part of this study is entitled "Dispersion of the Swastika". Here the author examines the role of the swastika in the extreme Orient (Japan, Korea, China, and Tibet), the classical Orient (Babylonia, Assyria, Chaldea, and Persia, Phenicia, Lycaonia, Armenia, Caucasus, and Asia Minor - including Troy and mentioning Schliemann), Africa (Egypt, Algeria, Ashantee), classical Occident (Mediterranean - Greece, Cyprus, Rhodes, Milos, and Thera), Europe (the Bronze Age, the Gallo-Roman period, the Anglo-Saxon period, and the swastika on ancient coins), the United States of America (in pre-Columbian times, among the North American Indians, and a "colonial patchwork"), Central America (Nicaragua, Yucatan, and Costa Rica), and South America (Brazil and Paraguay). The author shows various artifacts associated with the swastika including spindle-whorls, coins, vases, and idols. The author also notes the importance of this symbol among both the ancient Buddhists and Hindus. The third part of this study is entitled "Forms Allied to the Swastika". Here, the author notes the ancient symbols embodied in the meanders, ogees, and spirals (bent to both the left and the right) as well as mentioning aboriginal American engravings, various forms of the swastika including triskele, triskelion, and triquetum as designs on shells, and designs on pottery and basketry. The fourth part of this study is entitled "The Cross Among the American Indians". Here, the author notes the importance of the Cross among the American Indians and the various meanings of the Cross for them as well as noting the presence of the Cross on shells, copper, and pottery, and the alliance of the Cross to the swastika. The fifth part of this study is entitled "Significance of the Swastika". Here, the author discusses
the role of the swastika as a symbol (of a religion, of a nation or people, and of a sect with particular tenets), as an amulet or charm (of good luck or fortune or long life, of benediction or blessing, and against the evil eye), and as an ornament or decoration. The author concludes that the swastika was prehistoric in origin and occurred among the Buddhists and Brahmins and was found on common implements indicating that it was likely an amulet or charm. The sixth part of this study is entitled "The Migration of Symbols". Here, the author begins by considering the migration of the swastika noting its Aryan origins and the migrations it underwent as it traveled around the globe. The author also notes the role of myths and fables, habits and customs, etc. as means for transporting the swastika. The author also considers the migration of some of the other classical symbols, particularly as mentioned by Count Goblet d'Alviella in his work _La Migration des Symboles_, including the sacred tree of the Assyrians, the sacred cone of Mesopotamia, the Crux ansata (or the key of life), the winged globe, the caduceus, the trisula, and the double-headed eagle on the escutcheon of Austria and Russia. The seventh part of this study is entitled "Prehistoric Objects Associated with the Swastika, Found in Both Hemispheres, and Believed to Have Passed by Migration". Here, the author mentions such things as spindle-whorls (in Europe, North America, Central America, and South America) and bobbins (in Europe and the United States). The eight part of this study is entitled "Similar Prehistoric Arts, Industries, and Implements in Europe and America as Evidence of the Migration of Culture". Here, the author notes the role of various implements etc. and their role in migrations. The study ends with a Conclusion in which the author notes the role of the swastika and its migrations from the Old World to the New.

This study provides a fascinating account of mankind's earliest symbol and its migrations - the swastika. For primitive peoples, the swastika remained an important symbol found throughout the world on artifacts, implements, and works of art.
