The Presence Process: A Journey Into Present Moment Awareness, by Michael Brown

Why is it so difficult to respond consciously when we are upset? Why do we instead resort to hurtful, repetitive, unconscious, reactive behaviors?
The reason is that we all have deeply suppressed emotional imprints that are programmed into us through experience and other's example. This imprinting unfolds automatically throughout the first seven years of childhood. Until these emotional charges are consciously identified and integrated, whenever upset, like programmed organic machinery, we automatically resort to these reactive behaviors.
The Presence Process invites us to aspire to 'conscious emotional response' as a way of life. Reading and applying the simple procedure in this book makes it possible for anyone, anywhere, to transform the quality of their life experience from one of uncontrollable re-activity, to deliberate responsibility.
We all long to be free of our emotional outbursts and to rather experience inner calm responsiveness in the face of difficulty. What The Presence Process reveals through direct experience is that any attempt on our behalf to 'get rid of' our emotional discomfort is misguided. Rather, it experientially reveals to us the miraculous transformation that unfolds when we instead embrace conscious emotional responsibility.
The Presence Process is a guided, self-facilitated journey into taking full responsibility for our emotional condition. It is a step-by-step path for the unhappy child within us to grow up emotionally.

Open yourself up to the fullness and aliveness of who you really are
By J. Shafer
Michael Brown's 2nd edition of The Presence Process, is an amazing work. In this book, Mr. Brown explains what's happening in the human experience at the deepest possible level and he gives a very effective, practical tool to make it better. With The Presence Process, we are able open ourselves up to the fullness and aliveness of who we really are. What could be better than that?

Granted, this book isn't for everyone. To be ready to take this journey means that you will have to have convinced yourself that what you've been doing to feel good and get what you want out of life hasn't worked, if indeed it hasn't. And, you would have to be willing or able to really experience the uncomfortable feelings and emotions that the whole of human race has been avoiding for generations.

As an EMDR psychotherapist, I strongly recommend this book to all my clients. Not to `read' it but to `do' it; which means to `feel' life as it is showing up in each moment! The only thing I see missing, in this teaching and in all spiritual/psychological teachings, is effectively addressing a means to resolve the neuro-biology of how emotions, body sensations and beliefs-about-the-self are stored as limbic memory. Indeed, this is how EMDR therapy dove-tails nicely with the method of emotional integration and resolution that Mr. Brown is revealing to us.

Having read the 1st edition and done the 10-week presence process twice, and now reading this edition and doing the process again, I'm really just starting to get it. For one thing, Mr. Brown is writing on many levels. For me, each time through The Presence Process has been like reading an entirely different book!

Repetitious? Yes.

Indeed, his repetitions can certainly create dissonance for the mind, which is a meta-teaching in itself. When that happens, notice the resistance to, "He's, telling me this again", release the messenger (frustration towards the author), get the message ("this uncomfortable feeling is me"), and then `feel' it without condition. In return, insights, new understandings, and emotional resolution can slip unnoticed into awareness, often bringing with them a new perspective and way of being in life.

This book offers movement and direction towards emotional freedom, which comes through facing internal emotional discomfort head-on. Presence is used as the solvent for receiving what is showing up in our lives as what-is-required and learning to effectively be in that state of apparently negative emotional felt-resonance overtime is the Process; hence, The Presence Process - it's a life changer.

After reading a lot of Eckhart Tolle's work I found The Presence Process by searching for related work. The reviews on this book were/are nothing short of exceptional, so I added it to my cart. When it came, I have to admit initally I was not impressed... the writing was repetitive and vague, and I didn't yet have the capacity to digest its contents. But because I had an idea of where he was going, I proceeded to read through it. This was my first time through the "process."

A little bored, I would read through the weekly chapters and go about my business. Then slowly, it would dawn on me that I was unconsciously doing exactly what he had described in the chapter. I began to realize how much of my actions (and reactions) I was unaware of -- acting out of conditioned mental and emotional reflexes. It is so true that this book must be EXPERIENCED! There is no way to digest it mentally... to understand it with the intellect.

As the weeks went on, I found myself melting... thawing out places I didn't even know were there. My life was changing in ways imperceptible to anyone but me. And I was simply reading through it! By the 8th or 9th week I was hooked and already planning my second time through, where I would complete it as directed (which basically only added a couple breathing sessions per day). But I also needed to quit drinking in order to experience it completely (something I did have the courage to do after the first 10 weeks).

I just started week two of my second time through, and am in complete awe at the depth, clarity, precision, gentleness, and compassion of this text. It is one of the most beautiful and exceptional books I have read in my life. But let me say what he asks you to do is not EASY. And it must be done alone. It is a self-facilitated process that requires courage and humility, and will return to you 10 fold what you put into it. That is why I say, if you're on the fence, or if you've looked at it and not been impressed, give it a chance. Just read it cover to cover and see for yourself.

Spiritual Diamond
By Lightwright
This book deals with accessing the unconscious, which is not an easy thing to do. "What is good that is easy?" , I'd ask. Many years ago I had an experience of "Insight" via a convoluted trail. The effect of it imprinted upon me and allowed me a "glimpse" into what had formerly been unconscious This prior experience granted me great insight and helped to change my life, but as I'd not signed up for this out of my own volition in some way, I was only eventually able to hold on to intellectually.

When I encountered the words of Michael Brown while experiencing some real discomfort, I knew that what I was reading and hearing from this author was authentic and true. I recognized this from my prior experiences. This time I was ready to take the voyage within.

This is a very delicate subject of the utmost importance to each of us as humans who deserve to be able to enjoy our lives that we have that capacity for. Society, as it has evolved, is currently unable to support us in this endeavor. For this reason the writings of this author are all the more important.

The initial presentation might seem repetitive, but he has qualified this and my experience has been that it is with great and delicate attention that he does this and for no other reason. Trust in so many "gurus" has disappointed us in the past perhaps but then the past is the past and this is something that is available in the present. He does not endeavor to be anyone's guru but his own.

What are the odds that EVERYONE is out to con us? Isn't that a little radical, extreme?
This is the most earnest offering I've ever personally encountered. His vids on You Tube allow you to judge for yourself.

When we improve ourselves and our experience of life, we are able to BE in a way that can set an example in a world that is all too often in search mode . Michael Brown has experienced the harmony of Balance and has set out on a steep and rocky path to share it with people who need the repetition of a language perhaps because they have ceased to be able to hear even when they listen.

I'm currently doing the Process with the intention of releasing the gravity of my past and embracing the future with less fear. In a world where we are so time impoverished this seems to be a valid and well invested expenditure of time for me.

Namaste indeed!

The Simplicity Cycle: A Field Guide to Making Things Better Without Making Them Worse, by Dan Ward

The award-winning engineer, Air Force lieutenant colonel, and author of F.I.R.E offers a road map for designing winning new products, services, and business models, and shows how to avoid complexity-related pitfalls in the process. With a foreword by design guru Don Norman.

Humans make things every day, whether it’s composing an e-mail, cooking a meal, or constructing the Mars Rover. While complexity is often necessary in the development process, unnecessary complexity adds complications. The Simplicity Cycle provides the secret to striking the proper balance. Dan Ward shines a light on how complexity affects the things we make for good or ill, taking us on a journey through the process of making things, with a particular focus on identifying and avoiding complexity-related pitfalls.

The standard development process involves increasing complexity to improve the outcome, Ward explains. The problem comes when the complexity starts getting in the way—but often we don’t know where that point is until we pass it. He suggests a number of techniques for identifying the problem and fixing it, including how to overcome several types of wrongheaded thinking—such as the idea that complexity and quality are the same. In clear, compelling language, and using his trademark mix of examples from research, personal experience, and pop culture, Ward offers a universal concept, visually described with a single, evolving diagram.

Ideal for business leaders and technologists, The Simplicity Cycle is helpful for anyone looking to simplify and improve everything we do, whether we work in an office, at home, or at the Pentagon.

I felt like Ward was my personal coach standing by my side ...
By David Rinaldi
I suspect this book is marketed to too narrow of an audience. Yes, I can definitely see how it is an effective field guide for those in the design world, BUT it is just as helpful for those of us who work in the social sciences. Far from being stuffy, the Simplicity Cycle is laced with wit, humor, and helpful anecdotes. I felt like Ward was my personal coach standing by my side as I contemplated the best way to approach projects at my organization.

I also really appreciated how richly documented this book is. Ward provides the reader with numerous options for further learning on several topics.

Whether you are looking to cut costs, maximize profit, save time, or sharpen your interpersonal skills, this simple book will be worth your time.

Simplicity itself
By W. Goodman
Dan Ward really nails home a point in this book--that our tendency to confuse complexity with goodness creates significant problems in systems design. This rule applies whether you're a writer or a rocket scientist. If you can do it (whatever it is) with less, then you reduce the risks of unintended consequences, design flaws, mistakes, and the rest.

In the spirit of the book, I'll keep it simple: buy it, read it, learn it, do it.

Couldn't Put It Down - Simple and Effective!
By G
Dan's new book was featured in a college magazine article last year. While the topic of his book sounded intriguing, I took extra interest since we both graduated the same year from the same upstate NY engineering school (not sure I can promote that school by name here, but it provided a great foundation for both of us). So I decided to make the small investment and, at a minimum, help out a classmate with their dream.

Usually when I read a book, I'm asleep in the first 5 pages and it takes me way too long to finish. But I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. After 20 years working for an engineering consulting firm, every few pages reminded me of a struggle I'd had during those 20 years and perhaps a better way I could have approached those issues. I now have his trademark Simplicity Cycle figure memorized and use it on a regular basis as I start new designs or work to refine previous designs. My plan is to buy a few more copies and send it to other alumni who also work in this firm (one of which also graduated in the same class) because I know they'll appreciate it and find value in it, too.

Great work, Dan!

Making Sense of Media and Politics: Five Principles in Political Communication, by Gadi Wolfsfeld

Politics is above all a contest, and the news media are the central arena for viewing that competition. One of the central concerns of political communication has to do with the myriad ways in which politics has an impact on the news media and the equally diverse ways in which the media influences politics. Both of these aspects in turn weigh heavily on the effects such political communication has on mass citizens.

In Making Sense of Media and Politics, Gadi Wolfsfeld introduces readers to the most important concepts that serve as a framework for examining the interrelationship of media and politics:

  • political power can usually be translated into power over the news media
  • when authorities lose control over the political environment they also lose control over the news
  • there is no such thing as objective journalism (nor can there be)
  • the media are dedicated more than anything else to telling a good story
  • the most important effects of the news media on citizens tend to be unintentional and unnoticed.

By identifying these five key principles of political communication, the author examines those who package and send political messages, those who transform political messages into news, and the effect all this has on citizens. The result is a brief, engaging guide to help make sense of the wider world of media and politics and an essential companion to more in-depths studies of the field.

Review

"Making Sense of Media and Politics will appeal to many interested in gaining a basic but thorough understanding of the powerful role that media has in shaping political outcomes. Wolfsfeld constructs strong arguments to sustain his five principles, and encourages critical thinking among the readers in order to become more sophisticated consumers of news." ―Andreea Moise, British Politics and Policy at LSE, December 2011

"Authored by one of the world’s leading political communication scholars, Making Sense of Media and Politics presents an ideal blend of theory, research and argument, and does so in a way that is both sophisticated and accessible. Organized around five core and interrelated principles regarding the role of political elites, journalists, and the public, this book would serve well as either the central text in introductory political communication courses or as a supplement to more general courses in politics, journalism, and media studies." ―Michael X. Delli Carpini, University of Pennsylvania

"Concise, clear and conversational, this political communication primer is an insightful and engaging introduction to an important field of study." ―Kathleen Hall Jamieson, University of Pennsylvania.

"This lively and original synthesis of the research literature in political communication is at once a brilliant theoretical statement and a downright fun read. Wolfsfeld’s five basic principles about politics and the news don’t just summarize what we know. They distill the essential elements of how the system works into a new theoretical perspective that spells out why the most important things to understand about politics and the media are not what we expect them to be. This small book is destined for greatness. If I were stuck on a desert island with a single book about political communication as my only possession, I’d want it to be this one." ―Scott Althaus, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

"In Making Sense of Media and Politics, Gadi Wolfsfeld demystifies a complex story without jargon. He enlivens his account with wit and fresh, up-to-date examples. This is the ideal text for courses on Media and Society." ―William Gamson, Boston College

"Wolfsfeld speaks authoritatively and avuncularly to how citizens can better understand the interactions between media and politics. Drawing from prominent examples around the world―from Hurricane Katrina to the Oslo Accords―Making Sense of Media and Politics effectively illustrates the macro- and micro-level implications of today's nuanced media landscape. Whether it is the faithful print-newspaper reader or the web enthusiast, Wolfsfeld's engaging style is sure to stimulate readers' interest in more carefully scrutinizing how the media shape our political lives."
―Patricia Moy, University of Washington

About the Author
Gadi Wolfsfeld is Professor in the departments of political science and communication at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He also holds the Danny Arnold Chair in Communication. He is former chair of the political communication section of the American Political Science Association. Enlightening and Entertaining, Wit and Wisdom
By Stephen I. Gray
Finally a book that is both informative and entertaining and provides the basic tools to understand and analyze how the synergism of politics and media feed off one another. Wolfsfeld has a marvelous style, one that makes you feel like you are talking with a savvy friend who has graciously agreed to take behind the scenes of the political process. He does so with a wink and a smile to make sure you understand that while this is important stuff, it's critical to maintain a sense of humor. And that is perhaps the secret of this short but important addition to understanding of political communications today. Media & Politics is replete with references to current academic research and interlaced with Wolfsfeld's own insights and analysis, and therefore will become a "must read" in academic circles. It nonetheless is one of those rare books that easily cross the line to be supremely accessible to the layman. Enlightening and entertaining in equal measure, I highly recommend Making Sense of Media & Politics.

Grammar lovers beware.
By Cecily
We are reading "Making Sense of Media and Politics" in my mid-level Media and Politics course, and I cannot believe that a book this poorly-written (to say nothing of the editing!) is in use as a college textbook. The ideas and topics presented are valuable, but Wolfsfeld's writing and grammar is laughable. The persistent comma omissions, in particular, left me wanting to abandon the book after only a few pages. A reasonable person can only tolerate sentences like "Cultural bias doesn't however just influence which stories make it through the editing process it also has a major impact on how these news stories are constructed" for so long before they are driven to distraction and begin to deeply loathe the editor who sent such a monstrosity to the printers with his/her blessing. Frequent typos are equally distracting, and Wolfsfeld's halfhearted attempts at "in" references failed to engage or humor me.

I do not criticize the material presented--I think it is valuable and presents the reader with ways to make a more informed judgement about the vast amounts of information the media bombards us with daily. I do, however, take great issue with the actual presentation of that material. Several more rounds through the editing process would be the best thing that could happen to this sorry excuse for a college textbook. If I wanted to read something that sounded like an average middle-schooler wrote it, I would find an average middle schooler's notebook and peruse that instead.

Bottom line: if you are a literate, decently well-read human being, find a different book. If multiple glaring errors and embarrassing typos in every paragraph get you excited about reading, then by all means, buy it...you have my pity.

Perfect balance of academic rigor and ease of reading
By Abby Jones
As a once undergraduate student of Political Communication, and now doctoral student and Community College professor, I can say that Wolfsfeld's book is the perfect balance of academic rigor and ease of reading that every text book should strive for. Its academic insight, combined with its lighthearted tone will pull in students at all interest and academic levels and leave them wanting to go deeper into the field. By breaking the material into five clear principles, Wolfsfeld makes the material digestible, but does not sacrifice the nuances that are critical for continued study in the field. You finish the book feeling as if you have attended the Professor's classroom without having had to pay for the plane ride to Israel. I would highly suggest that professors, wether they are seeking a primary text or a political communication book to add to a more comprehensive Political Science or Communication class, consider this one.
